The Eliminate Project - 2013
Information from Ava Adams-Talley, Port Charlotte Sunrise Kiwanis Member and "The Eliminate Project" Kiwanis International Representative for SW Florida - Districts 18South & 18 North.
"The Eliminate Project is a global campaign for mothers and their newborn babies. It will eliminate tetanus deaths(MNT) and aims to save the lives of 129 million mothers and newborns. In partnership with UNICEF Kiwanis is eliminating a disease that kills one baby every nine minutes or 160 newborns every day. On a larger scale tetanus kills 60,000 babies and 40,000 mothers every year.
The majority of mother and newborns dying of tetanus live in Africa and southern and east Asia but closer to home is Haiti which is one of the 32 countries targeted by this project. Generally these are areas where women are poor, have little access to health care and have little information about safe delivery practices.
The cost of saving a life is $1.80 for a series of 3 vaccinations which will protect a woman for 10 years and her newborn for 2 months. Not only will the Eliminate Project protect women and babies from tetanus, the project also will create a path for other services such as clean water, nutrition and other vaccines to reach the world’s most vulnerable people.
UNICEF started this program in 1999 and asked Kiwanis to join forces in 2010.When Kiwanis joined with UNICEF 90 million potential mothers and their babies were already vaccinated from tetanus in 10 years in 19 countries. Kiwanis is committed to raising $110 million by 2015 which will eliminate tetanus from the face of the earth.
As of Sept 2012 Kiwanis has raised $18.3 million and 7 countries have successfully eliminated tetanus deaths since 2010. When UNICEF started the program 59 countries were targeted; today there are 32 countries still needing our help.
Please consider supporting the Eliminate Project. $1.80 will save a life!"
