Joe Tiseo, Charlotte County Commissioner, District 5, Special Speaker - 01/04/2018

Joe Tiseo, County Commissioner, District 5, Charlotte County, was the special speaker at the Thursday morning meeting of the Port Charlotte Sunrise Kiwanis. Mr. Tiseo spoke on the growth of Charlotte County and several projects planned for Murdock Village and Charlotte Harbor.

The 2017 "Shoes For Kids" Project Report

             The Kiwanis Shoes for Kids Project purpose is to provide new tennis shoes to any student in the Charlotte County Public School System which needs them to begin the new school year or throughout the academic year.   During the 2017 summer drive, we were able to meet our goal number of 5000 new pairs of schools for the start of the school year; we collected over 7,500 pairs of new sneakers.  As of this writing we have placed in excess of,  6,400 new pairs of sneakers during the 2017-18 academic year.


Sunrise Kiwanis Elementary School Reading Program - A Success! - 12/22/2017

The Port Charlotte Sunrise Kiwanis have "adopted" the Neil Armstrong Elementary School and the Peace River Elementary School for the "Reading Program. Each child participating in the program receives a variety of complimentary books - purchased by the Sunrise Kiwanis and chosen by the teacher - and those books are read to the class by the Sunrise Kiwanis participating members. John Schoenbauer, Rachael Lowe   (Neil Armstrong Elementary) and Joan Greene (Peace River Elementary School) are shown holding handwritten "Thank You" Christmas cards from the students.

Jolene Mowry, BackPackKidz Founder, Special Speaker. - 12/22/2017

Jolene Sellers Mowry was the Special Speaker at the December 21st Thursday morning weekly meeting of the Port Charlotte Sunrise Kiwanis. Ms. Mowry, Founder of the Back Pack Kidz program, shared with the Sunrise Kiwanians the goals and successes of the Back Pack Kidz. Ms. Mowry said the goal was to feed hungry children one backpack at a time. Many children in Charlotte County do not have a stable source of food except the free or reduced breakfast and lunch provided by the schools. We bridge the gap by providing a backpack filled with nutritious food items to over 800 children every weekend. The cost to feed one child for the school year is $160.00. Kay Carpenter Donates Baby Blankets to Sunrise Kiwanis. - 12/22/2017

Kay Carpenter, wife of Sunrise Kiwanis member Bob Carpenter recently crocheted 10 baby blankets for the Sunrise Kiwanis. These blankets were then presented to Sunrise Kiwanis member, Joan Greene and donated to Gardian ad Litem. Since 2016, Kay has crocheted over 60 blankets and these blankets have been donated to Homeless Coalition and the Salvation Army.

Sunrise Kiwanis Members Participate in Chamber Christmas Parade - 12/12/2017

To announce the upcoming "Duck Race", the Port Charlotte Sunrise Kiwanis participated in the 2017 Charlotte County Chamber of Commerce Christmas Parade. Under the direction of Sunrise member, Mark Kemeny, the float was built by Sunrise members several weeks before the parade and displayed a Santa Claus and "Duck Race Track" with a banner giving Duck Race information. Special "Thanks" to the Sunrise members who participated!

Sunrise Kiwanis Members Pack Bags for Thanksgiving Food Baskets. - 11/18/2017

30 bags of food were packed for 20 families for Thanksgiving. 10 Sunrise Kiwanis members did the work in record time. Special thanks to other members who contributed food items and Christy Smith who coordinated the project with Neil Armstrong and Peace River elementary schools. Turkeys and pies along with the food bags will be delivered in time for Thanksgiving. Give thanks for our blessings!
